It’s hardly unusual for a member of Guided By Voices other than Robert Pollard to handle vocal duties for a song or two. Tobin Sprout performed vocals for the many songs he contributed to the band during his time, and Nick Mitchell sang his own tunes on the Ricked Wicky releases, plus there have been other one-offs (Jim Greer singing his composition “Trendspotter Acrobat” comes to mind). Starting with August By Cake, however, the band members have all been contributing vocals more frequently, on their own compositions for August By Cake and on Pollard-written tunes for B-sides of some of the recent singles. On “Your Cricket Is Rather Unique,” a Pollard composition slated for inclusion on future LP Street Party (and the B-side on the “You Own The Night” single), it’s drummer Kevin March who steps up to provide the vocals (with bassist Mark Shue joining in on the chorus, from what I’ve heard).
