A guitar technique Robert Pollard often uses in his compositions is one that I refer to on this site as Open String Drone. It’s a combination of a fretted note (or notes) on one or more strings and an adjacent string played open (without fretting any notes). In the case of “Tom Tom Small And Wonderful,” Pollard uses a couple of different chord shapes that are played with an open drone fifth string.
