As the legend goes, Robert Pollard conjured the song title “My Dog Surprise” after mishearing a lyric in Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love” (“I’ll soon be with you, my love/give you my dawn surprise“). I can’t help but wonder, then, if this is the reason for some of the lyrics in “My Dog Surprise” being so hard to decipher. Did Pollard purposely aim for incoherence in his vocal track to allow us to contrive our own off-the-wall phrases based on his misheard lyrics? That being said, I did my best to discern the lyrics for this song, but I can tell I’m incorrect in a few spots (if anyone has a better guess for the second line, please let me know!).
