When it’s just Robert Pollard and an acoustic guitar, the beauty of his songwriting really shines through. Listen to some of the early Guided By Voices recordings, some of the material on the Suitcase box sets, or demo recordings such as those on Edison’s Demos. On these bare-bones recordings, you can clearly hear him using some of the techniques I refer to in these posts. One of these I’ve nicknamed “Floating Chord Shapes,” and it involves Pollard moves an open position chord to a different fret, creating some of the unique chord voicings that are prevalent in his songwriting.
