I have a theory about several of the songs on From A Compound Eye. The songs in question are “Hammer In Your Eyes,” “Kick Me And Cancel,” and “I’m A Widow,” and the theory is that Robert Pollard sat down with his guitar and wrote the main riff for all three in one sitting. Each of those three songs has a main riff built around an Open String Drone guitar technique, with a D note ringing out on the open fourth string and a melody played on various frets of the third string. The three riffs are similar in that respect, yet he crafted three totally different songs on the same album using this same technique.
