“Do The Earth” is one of Guided By Voices’ best non-album tracks, in my opinion. If nothing else, the song includes some of my favorite lyrics of Robert Pollard’s. The line, “you offer salvation and I salivate” was even so good that he had to use it in this song and also in “Deaf Ears.” In terms of guitar work, Pollard is using a lot of open string droning here, along with some two-string chords that involve a fretted note on the sixth string with the open fifth string.
