Learning how to play “Dancing Girls And Dancing Men” on guitar had me pretty stumped for a while; with the prominent (and very bouncy) bassline, drums, and keyboards, it doesn’t seem like a particularly guitar-driven song. Especially with the Todd Tobias-produced Robert Pollard songs, I often have to remind myself that Pollard wrote it on a guitar, as he does most of his songs (save for a few piano numbers) and therefore likely didn’t stray much from his usual guitar techniques. Tobias tends to add quite a few layers of instruments on some songs, sometimes burying the rhythm guitar in the mix, making it difficult to hear. This, of course, is no knock on his work as a producer; it just means I have to work harder to decipher how to play the song.
