Sadly, I can’t claim to have been a Guided By Voices fan when Sandbox was released in 1987 (I would have had very good taste for a seven-year-old), but those older albums were some of the first GBV music I heard. My introduction to their music came circa 1996 in the form of a GBV mix cassette made for me by the bass player of a band I played guitar in at the time, and side A was comprised mostly of songs from Sandbox and Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia. In fact, “Barricade,” the subject of today’s post, was the fifth song on the cassette, so it was indeed one of the first GBV songs I ever heard and I love it as much today as I did then.
